The journey of the South Central High School concert band is a testament to dedication, hard work, and the power of music to bring people together.
After their Winter Concert in 2022, Mr. Gaither recognized the potential of his band and decided to enter them into the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Large Group Adjudicated Contest. Despite facing challenges like intonation, the band persevered with additional rehearsals and support from professional musicians. Their efforts paid off when they earned straight Superior ratings at Districts, qualifying them for the OMEA State Contest for the first time in decades.
In 2023, the band aimed to return to OMEA Districts. Mr. Gaither selected a piece called "Skeemantics" by Ohio native Lisa Galvin to honor the late James Daniel Meeks, a respected band director. Lisa herself worked with the band, sharing the story behind the composition, which deeply moved both her and the students. Their performance at Districts, judged by Patricia Meeks, widow of James Meeks, earned them another round of straight Superiors, securing their spot at the OMEA State Contest once again.
Before their sight-reading event, Lisa Galvin and Patricia Meeks surprised the band by attending, showing their support and appreciation for the performance of "Skeemantics" and the band's overall dedication. Their presence added an extra layer of significance to the event.
The band's hard work culminated in a Superior rating at the State Contest, a feat not achieved since 1978. Their success not only honored their own dedication but also the memory of past directors like Ronald Zoz and the legacy of James Meeks.
The journey of the South Central Concert Band exemplifies the power of music to inspire, unite, and achieve greatness.
